CLUB AVIVA IS CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF SUCESSES
In 1986, 40 years ago, Club Aviva was founded by Vivien Symington. Our programs began with approximately 300 children and youth and has continued to grow over the years.
Vivien served as the head coach of a gymnastics club she founded in Halifax while studying in a Master's program at Dalhousie University. She founded one of the first preschool programs in Canada. In 1984 she moved to BC and was encouraged to start a preschool/developmental gymnastics program in Coquitlam. Today, over 2000 participants in recreational, therapeutic, and competitive programs attended Club Aviva weekly. Club Aviva continues to be a leader in the field of gymnastics through inclusive programming where no child is left behind.
The heart of Club Aviva’s philosophy is deeply influenced by the pioneering vision of Dr. David Symington. His lifelong dedication to advancing human development, compassion‑centered care, and accessible rehabilitation laid the foundation for values that guide us today. His belief that every individual, regardless of ability, holds incredible potential continues to shape the spirit of our programs, our coaching, and our community.
Dr. Symington championed inclusivity long before it became a standard. His commitment to honoring the whole person inspired our focus on creating welcoming environments where participants are not defined by challenges, but uplifted by their strengths. His teachings echo through our emphasis on growth mindset, perseverance, and celebrating effort as much as achievement.
Above all, Dr. Symington’s legacy reminds us that connection, kindness, and empathy are transformative forces. These principles are woven into the fabric of Club Aviva—guiding how we support families, design programs, nurture confidence, and help each participant move forward with courage and joy.
